This is another doodle from my sketchbook while we were gone on vacation. I didn’t finish it mainly because I got board. I hope you think it’s interesting. Maybe I’ll get back to it and finish it one day.

The idea for this one started with all of the birds we saw on vacation. Then I went surfing on Pinterest for something similar. I liked what I found and modified it. The original had a woman riding bird like this one and talking to a frog. I changed the colors and exchanged a woman for a cowboy playing harmonica with his bed roll and a fishing pole. I drew this across a spread in my sketchbook. Here’s what the whole spread looks like.

I enjoyed drawing the hummingbird so much I looked up an image of a Kingfisher on Google. This is my version of what I found. Enjoy.

I discovered something while I was on vacation last week. The place where we stayed had these great hummingbird feeders and bird feeders for smaller birds. I had been wanting to practice doodling birds, but with the kids awake I couldn’t draw a thing. However, while the kids were asleep I was able to reflect on what I had seen. Hummingbirds are truly amazing. The way they can fly backwards, frontwards, and side to side like a helicopter is awesome. And then I saw something I had never seen a hummingbird do before. It stood on perch to the feeder and rested for about three seconds. I never thought about it before, but hummingbirds can actually fold in their wings and rest. I had always taken it for granted before, but seeing it first hand gave me pause. So that’s what I drew; a hummingbird at rest.

Last weekend we celebrated my daughter’s birthday. My brother arranged his family vacation so they could come back through our town to visit on my daughter’s birthday. I am very grateful. It was great seeing he and his family. After flying back from their vacation they drove back home. In my playful imagination this is what it would have looked like if they had traveled turtle style.

I wanna tell ya something iguana this way is coming. This started out as a quick doodle with a carmine col-erase pencil while I was on vacation with my family, but then it started to evolve into something more. Iguana tell ya something is coming soon, but not quite yet. Be on the look out.

The great thing about being on vacation is not having to worry about being too specific about anything and just trying to let loose a little. This was a fun little robot that came out of quick messy doodling. Maybe even channeling a little Jake Parker.
